CSV contact import

CSV import loads contacts from a spreadsheet exported from Excel or Google Sheets, filtering out anything that is not a valid US or Canadian number as it goes.

Export your sheet as a CSV with a header row, choose the group the contacts should land in, and upload. Anything without a usable number is dropped rather than silently stored, so you do not spend credits sending to a column of half-typed digits.

Getting the file right

Keep a header row. One contact per line. Numbers can include brackets, dashes and spaces; those are normalised on the way in. What cannot be fixed automatically is a number that is missing digits or belongs to a country outside the US and Canada.

If you are merging several sources, dedupe before uploading rather than after. It is easier in a spreadsheet than in a dashboard.

The part that matters more than the file format

You may only import numbers that have given you permission to text them.

This is worth stating plainly because it is the single most common way a new account gets into trouble. A list of customers who bought something is not automatically a list of people who agreed to marketing texts. A purchased list is never acceptable, and a list scraped from anywhere is worse.

The consequence is not theoretical. Complaint rates from a cold list get a number blocked quickly, and by then the damage is to your ability to reach the people who did want to hear from you.

If you are unsure whether your existing list qualifies, the safer route is to text it once asking people to confirm, or to start again with a keyword or the opt-in widget.

There is no charge to import and no cap on how many contacts you store.
